To partner with God in protecting the children of Thailand while providing opportunities for parents and guardians to become disciples of Christ.
The name Special Blessings gives a hint. Our goal is to help special needs children by providing opportunities to develop life skills and provide their parents or guardians support and training.
We believe that God has chosen northeast Thailand or Isan as the place of beginnings for Special Blessings. More specifically in a town called Nakhon Ratchasima or Korat, by the locals. The Isan people are living in the poorest area in Thailand. Many of the adults here have not been given education opportunities. The jobs here are few and consist primarily of day labor or street vending. Neither providing future security for those growing older. Children are seen as this old-age security--someone who will provide income for their parents as they become unable to do strenuous manual labor for 10-hour-days under the Thailand sun.
As you can imagine the birth of a special needs child delivers quite a blow. First, the security of old age income is gone. Second, someone must stop working to provide care for the child. Third, there is a great stigma attached to any disability in local community. This stigma can cause the family to become outcasts in the community.
Special Blessings Korat was born out of a desire to help one child. Her name is KaoHawm. (Meaning fragrant rice) God has used our time with KaoHawn to instruct and enlighten us on the challenges of the disabled in Thailand. He also lit a fire in our heart to assist more families with special needs children. (Read her Story:)
